The weird science of Antonio Banderas

, A horror thriller that stars Banderas as a mad scientist who creates a different kind of life out of obsession and dangerous experimentation. It’s a story that may ring a few cinematic bells.

“Frankenstein?” said Almódovar on Thursday after the first screening of the movie at the Cannes Film Festival. “That’s a reference which I noticed myself, once I saw the film.” Jonquet. It tells the story of a plastic surgeon who develops a new kind of skin that can’t be damaged by fire and is impervious to mosquitoes. Against all medical ethics, he wants to test it on a human subject, and he launches a plan — “You’re insane,” a colleague says to him in the movie — after his teenage daughter is raped by a womanizing window dresser.

It’s a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster itself, a jumble of genres from a director best known for the brightly lit melodramas about the lives of women, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1990), both of which starred Banderas.

Almódovar said thrillers “fit in with my life at present. … I’m in a thriller period.” He said thrillers can bring together other kinds of movies, such as melodrama, musicals and comedy, without forcing him to abide by their rules, and he plans to make more.

“When I started to think about them, I thought about the terror films of the 1940s,” chiefly the work of Fritz Lang. He originally wanted to make a silent movie in black and white — a plan he didn’t reveal to his cast, and one that would have given this year’s Cannes Film Festival two black and white silents, after the French film The Artist . However, Almódovar discarded that idea in favour of a thriller that didn’t have too much gore. “I didn’t want a film where you see blood flowing all over the place. I didn’t want it to be brutal.”

As for Banderas, who gets to play the psychopath, he said his reunion with Almódovar was “a wonderful lesson for me. He makes me think about creating like an actor, not using little tricks of the trade.” His character is tormented, but he has to show it, not by gesticulating to the camera, but in his stillness: the way he casually tells a victim about the terrifying operation he has just performed on him, for instance.
