Mercedes-Benz Delivers Expected Quality In Wagon
Smaller and more utilitarian premium station wagons are becoming all the vogue these days and few are more satisfying than the Mercedes-Benz GLK350.
Introduced in 2009 as a 2010 entry, the GLK models are not too big, not too small and Goldilocks right on the outside and inside, giving owners the luxury they expect from a Mercedes-Benz and the utility necessary in any wagon.
Offered in both rear-wheel-drive (as driven) and all-wheel-drive, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 is an excellent everyday machine that shines on longer trips. Largely unchanged for the 2011 season, M-B’s smallest and least expensive compact SUV/crossover has added a driver’s knee airbag and lower front-seat side airbags to an already well-equipped grouping.
Based on Mercedes-Benz’s lovely C-class sedan chassis, the GLK350 harbors a dual overhead cam 3.5-liter V-6 engine that extracts 268 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and an excellent 258 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm. Redline is 6,200 rpm, so at 70 mph, the GLK is loafing at 2,050 rpm.
This lively engine is perfectly mated with a seven-speed automatic gearbox that can be shifted on the fly and has crisp exchanges. With both Eco and Sport modes to the transmission (and suspension), one can choose the attitude for the trip of the day and toggle between them for more sport or luxury.
The chassis on this vehicle is so well constructed it handles all road imperfections without complaint, yet gives back no feelings of isolation in the process. It almost feels like you could run over a motocross track without complaints. The GLK350’s front MacPherson strut and multi-link rear independent suspensions have front and rear stabilizer bars to keep the wagon fully planted.
The rack-and-pinion speed-sensitive, hydraulic power steering with variable centering changes heft when placed from Eco to Sport and becomes more taut and sporting in the latter mode. The turning circle is 37.7 feet and a quick 2.8 turns lock-to-lock.
