Sam Rayburn has been falling this week and is now at 155.88 We had some rain this last week, it hasn’t brought the lake up any as they continue to release water. That’s over 8.52 ft low.
As a result, there are a lot of sandbars that are just under the surface. If you’re new to the lake, it can be very dangerous. Remember to slow down until you get familiar with the areas you will be running. We have had boaters stuck on sand bars all night. That isn’t the way you want to start a weekend or vacation.
Also, remember to keep a safety vest on each passenger in the boat every time you are on the water.
The top water bite was doing a little better this week before the front hit and things slowed down. It will start again as things warm back up.
The Stanley Ribbit worked around the pads, and the little bit of pepper grass that is starting to show up has been exciting. There has been a lot of fish hanging on the grass line that we have been catching on Senko’s and wacky worms.
Now let’s get to some faster moving baits to cover some water. Crankbaits and Spinner baits are just some of those baits. Working on the edges of the grass and off the ledges and creek channels can be a lot of fun and can drag up some great fish. The main depth here is six to 14 feet, for the most part and I like sharp points and edges.
There are a lot of different ways to work these baits, from burning them back to the boat to slow rolling them on the bottom and off the timber. It’s an art to work them though the timber and off the bottom. You’re going to lose one now and then but you can catch fish with them.
Now for the deep structure on the points and humps. The main choice is a Carolina Rig or Football Jig and there are lots of ways to work both of them. Start by dragging them super slow, then try picking up the speed or hopping them across the bottom. This is something you have to work on to see what the fish want.
