Pride pounds Wildcats
RALEIGH -- There was no charm the third time for East Chapel Hill girls soccer. Leesville Road eliminated the Wildcats for the third straight year in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A playoffs with a 4-1 win Friday night.
Leesville Road's Stephanie Brunson scored in the fourth minute for a quick 1-0 lead, and the Pride kept the pressure on to advance to the East Regional Finals.
"The whole lore of losing to Leesville the last two years, it was kind of a tough thing psychologically and to give the goal up makes it tough to fight back," East Chapel Hill coach mark Kadelecik said.
Caroline Gentry factored into all four tallies for the Pride. The junior had two goals and two assists to lead the team with 68 points on the season.
Gentry assisted on Brunson's goal and then the pair flip-flopped on the next goal with Brunson crossing to Gentry, who nimbly redirected the pass into the far-side of the goal from just outside the box. The goal gave the Pride a 2-0 lead with 14:38 remaining in the first half.
"Stephanie Bronson once again rose to the occasion and she put it away beautifully," Leesville Road coach Paul Dinkenor said.
East Chapel Hill (20-6-3) struggled early to get through the tenacious but young defense. And when they did manage, freshman goalkeeper Zaria Maynard was waiting.
"We replaced our defense [this year]. We have one returning starter. I thought the job Sidney Frozzel did was outstanding," Dinkenor said. "I thought Anne Cushman did a fantastic job too. And that's a freshman and a sophomore," Dinkenor added.
East Chapel Hill turned up the pressure in the second half down two, but that led to fast-break opportunities for the Pride.
Gentry chased down a long outlet pass and fed a streaking Brielle Pittman who knocked in the third goal of the game at 21:07 in the second half. Then 24 seconds later Gentry again took a long pass, got by the defender and dribbled to the near-side of the goal along the baseline. Running out of real estate, Gentry back-footed the ball behind her with her heel and the ball trickled past the over-committed goalkeeper into the far-side of the net for the 4-0 lead.
