U.S. crop planting remains slow
WASHINGTON, May 23 (UPI) -- Planting for most crops remains well behind their historic averages, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday.
Nationally, 79 percent of the corn acreage has been planted against a five-year average of 87 percent for this week of the year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Six critical corn-producing states have more than 90 percent of the corn acreage planted, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday.
Of the 18 most important corn-producing states, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina and Texas have at least 90 percent of their corn seed in the ground. An additional four states -- Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri and Tennessee -- have 80 percent or more of their acreage planted for the week ending May 23.
Nationally, 57 percent of the cotton crop has been planted, compared to a historic average of 61 percent for this week of the year. Forty-one percent of the nation's soybean acreage has been planted, 10 percentage points behind its historic average of 51 percent for this week of the year.
The USDA said 40 percent of the nation's sorghum acreage has been planted, in step with the crop's five-year average. Sixty percent of the nation's peanut crop is planted, slightly ahead of the crop's long-term average.
In the nation's six most critical rice-producing states, 61 percent of the crop is reportedly planted, well behind the five-year average of 77 percent. Spring wheat is even farther behind with 54 percent of the nation's planting completed, compared to a five-year average of 89 percent for this week of the year.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture advises consumers to not consume raw milk and dairy products because they may contain pathogenic bacteria that can make them sick.
