Major Decisions

History says that a college freshman looking to make money upon graduation would be well-served by majoring in science, getting a graduate degree, and moving into a managerial role later in life. He should stay away from arts and education fields, which are financial and vocational dead-ends. And the advice goes double if the freshman is a she, even if she is less likely to follow the recommendations.

That's the message of a new report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce , which uses new data from the Census Bureau to explore the median salaries and career paths of college graduates from the last 40 years. The census surveyed more than 3 million bachelor's degree-holders in America about their major, current position, and current salary.

The salary figures complied for the report are what each person made in 2009, so they represent a mix of entry-level, mid-career, and late-career workers. Because the report is based on census data, it is a snapshot of all graduates between 25 and 64 and does not take into account changes over time.

For 15 broad categories of majors, such as engineering, physical science, and business, the report explores the median and quartile pay, the percentage of the major comprising women and minorities, and the percentage of individuals from that major who went on to get graduate degrees. The report also breaks down those groups and explores similar data for 171 individual majors.

Some of the results are to be expected. Science, engineering, and business majors tend to be better-off financially than majors in liberal arts and humanities, education, and counseling. In addition to a wide discrepancy among average salaries, the study finds that the most popular majors have not been the ones leading to high-paying jobs, that female and minority students have tended to cluster in low-paying fields, and that graduate degrees have been essentially required for some undergraduate majors if those students were to find good jobs.

SL2College Blog: SL2College Skype Sessions & Web Chats

On October 6th, 2010, SL2College made history in Sri Lanka by organising a Skype session connecting graduate students abroad to a packed audience of undergraduate students at the University of Moratuwa. The virtual panel provided a medium for a live discussion and gave undergraduate students the opportunity to learn and seek advice from seniors who have moved abroad for higher studies. Since then, the Skype sessions have been one of the most popular and exciting events at university level. The response from both ends – students in Sri Lanka who have benefited from the sessions and speakers worldwide, have been overwhelming. The sessions take place via a conference call. About 5-9 speakers, mostly graduate or post-doc students, join in from locations worldwide. Many are alumni from universities in Sri Lanka, where they did their undergraduate degree. It has been a delight to have such an enthusiastic and dedicated group of speakers on the panel – especially considering that often, they were joining in very early in the day or late at night due to the time difference! So far, we have had speakers from US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The topic of discussion at the Skype session is mostly on graduate studies. Common topics of discussion include what the graduate application requirements are, how to find supervisors, graduate level expectations, the kinds of research projects undertaken for MS/PhD, exciting and frustrating points at the lab, the importance of giving back to the country despite going abroad for higher education, etc. The Skype sessions are held at universities in Sri Lanka every 1-2 months now. So far, they have been held at University of Colombo, University of Colombo School of Computing and University of Moratuwa. Very soon, sessions will be held outside of Colombo as plans are already underway to have them at University of Peradeniya and University of Uva Wellasa, Badulla.
