Caveman boys earn improbable second; Knight Morrin finally gets his gold
The American Fork boys cemented their program's place among the state's elite with their 5A second-place finish overall in the Utah State Track and Field Championships at BYU Saturday.
With more than double the athletes of any other program in the classification, Davis won both the boys and girls titles handily.
In the boys division, the Cavemen edged Riverton (69) by a single point to finish second with 70 to 93 for the Darts. Copper Hills was fourth at 58.
Reaching such company was an accomplishment in itself, but the point spread with Davis was even more remarkable.
"We had a big mountain to climb to beat Davis, and we got halfway up," said American Fork distance coach Timo Mostert .
He explained that if the Cavemen and Darts had performed according to their seeding, Davis would have won by 41 points instead of just 23.
"With as few boys as we had, to be able to beat big programs like Riverton and Copper Hills is amazing," Mostert said. "All of our guys had to enter multiple events, and they gave everything they had."
Ten athletes accounted for all of American Fork's points, but head coach Art Taylor noted that most of them came from Mostert's stable of outstanding runners, who have brought national notoriety to the school.
Senior Austin West and junior Clayton Young repeated their feat from Friday's 1,600-meter run, going 1-3 in the 3,200.
Ashenafe Richardson and MacKenzie Morrison finished fifth and sixth for the Cavemen in the event, adding points as well. Young, Richardson and West went 5-6-7 in the 800.
Noting that the team had tied for 18th place in 2009 and finished fifth last year, West said, "My first year we weren't the best. We kept building up guys and started getting faster and faster.
"Our first year, just winning at region we were ecstatic. Finishing fifth at state last year felt great. Not many people can say they were in the top six with three teammates up there with you. It feels great," he added.
