Memorial Day holiday kicks off vacation season... What are you going to do?

School is just about out, Memorial Day is just around the corner, and it is about time for that family vacation.

So what are you going to do? Head to Disney World with the family? Take a cruise or make your way to the Gulf for some time at the beach? Take a weekend trip to an amusement park in Arlington or San Antonio? Or will you be one of many people who'll spend the summer at home around Abilene for a staycation?

Tom Blackwell said he and his family just returned from a weekend trip to Dallas, and his wife, Holly, and son, Cade, are planning a trip to Maine to visit family.

In Dallas, the entire family went to the zoo and had a full weekend of activities.

"We kicked off the summer a bit early this year," Blackwell said.

With gas prices having dropped in the past week, some people may be looking for a trip to a regional destination over the holiday weekend.

AAA Texas projected the number of Texans traveling on vacation this Memorial Day weekend will increase by almost 1 percent from 2010, with approximately 2.75 million people taking a trip away from home. In 2010, AAA says 2.727 million Texans traveled during the same period.

Nationally, AAA projects 34.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a slight increase of two-tenths of 1 percent — or 100,000 travelers — from the 34.8 million people who traveled one year ago. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday to Monday.

"The Texas economy is in better shape than many other areas, and the state gas prices are lower than the national average, so those may be reasons why more Texans are expected to travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend," said AAA Texas Regional Vice President and General Manager Rhonda Wilson. "Our survey shows we expect to see increases in all forms of travel. However, some travelers say they'll compensate for higher fuel costs by being more careful in other areas of their travel budgets.
